Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Oscar de la Hoya v. Steve Forbes
MAIN EVENT
10:00 PM ET - HBO
OSCAR DE LA HOYA
Ring Magazine No. 3 Ranked Junior Middleweight
(38-5, 30 KO, East Los Angeles, CA)
versus
STEVE FORBES
(33-5, 9 KO, Las Vegas, NV, by way of Portland, OR)
Both weighed in at the agreed limit of 150 pounds, though Oscar was a half pound over before he took off his shoes.
The only way Steve Forbes can win this fight is if he boxes the absolute, bar none, 100 percent, not a bad moment, fight of his natural born life. And Oscar has to make a lot of mistakes, too. We've seen Oscar screw the pooch in a fight like this before. One would assume he really does mean it when he says he won't let that happen again, but you just never know until the bell has sounded.
We'll be here with round-by-round coverage, scoring and BSing during the fight, so join us.

That should pretty much put an end to the Darnell Wilson fascination. The man can't box.

Round 1
Oscar to the body. He's going jab, body, body, and he looks quick and in really good shape. Forbes is playing a tight defense. Forbes with a four-punch combo, I don't think anything landed squarely or close to it.
Oscar with a nice, stiff jab that gets home. Right hand from Oscar, who's staying admirably busy but having trouble getting through Forbes' D. At the same time, Forbes isn't getting any offense in whatsoever.
Good looking rights from Oscar, two of them right over the top. Nice combo from Forbes, a left hook and a straight right, and then he does it again.

Round 2
And here comes Stevie Forbes with another combo, and Oscar clinches up. Forbes bites on a left feign but Oscar doesn't follow up. Lampley sees a trickle of blood from Forbes nose, and there's some excellent body punches from de la Hoya.
Stevie Forbes simply can't play enough O with this D to win the rounds. And without a stunner home run shot, he's not going to get a knockout. He plans to take Oscar deep and test his conditioning, but we'll see if that makes any difference.
Forbes comes in with a jab and Oscar nails him with a fast left hook, a shot that would've been a knockdown punch had it been just a hair longer.

Round 3
Forbes with a couple of wild swings, then he eats a terrific jab and Oscar goes to the body with a left hook. Jab to the body from Forbes, and he's trying to flick that thing in upstairs.
Lots of circling, both guys trying to find a way in, both failing to do so. Oscar seems to shake him up a little on a body shot exchange. Stevie Forbes is trying to match up physically with Oscar, but it just doesn't look like that's possible. He's doing a good job of staying relatively competitive, but he's certainly not winning rounds.

Round 4
Forbes is really starting to press the action in the first minute of this round. Stevie gets backed into the ropes, but gets out. There's a weird looking clinch from Oscar, he basically pulled him in.
Forbes is showing no fear of Oscar's power, which could be more mind game than anything else. But no one will deny he's a tough chinned SOB, either.
There's some good stuff from Oscar, and Stevie eats it up and dances around. Forbes is taunting Oscar now -- how about that?
All the showboating is entertaining enough, but he's losing another round. Those punches ARE landing. They DO count. And Forbes isn't doing much to make a case for himself. I mean, I'm not saying he's fighting a bad fight. He's not. This is probably as good or close to as good as he can do.

Round 5
Half of the round goes by and it looks very much the same as the first four have. Forbes is playing a nice defense but not scoring, and Oscar is landing just enough, throwing lots of combinations, working a good jab, and winning the rounds without any real doubt about it.

Round 6
Left hook trade, and Forbes held his own. Oscar misses two uppercuts and goes back to the jab. Forbes opens up with heavy punching, but Oscar blocks the big right. Moments later, Oscar seems to find an opening, but Forbes does a good job.
Forbes has a cut outside of his right eye. Shouldn't be an issue unless they brought Juan Diaz's cut man.
Quick left hook from Oscar, and Lampley notes the approaching room elephant: Oscar's jab has gone away again. Why? Again, it's been his best weapon.
Right hand from Oscar, Forbes dances it off. Nice round from both guys, a very competitive one. Actually the last two rounds have been the closest of the fight. Stevie Forbes is doing the best he can, even if he's losing.

Round 7
Action slows down after that as Stevie Forbes doesn't look like he liked the punches he ate. Forbes takes a few shots to the body, and with 40 seconds left, he's falling yet another round behind. He'll need a KO, really.
Oscar opens up against the ropes, and Forbes survives. Big punching from de la Hoya, and that seals a round he was already winning.

Round 8
Oscar continues to plug away, eliminating most of the offensive ideas Steve Forbes might let enter his mind, and forcing him into the role of defender. I'm glad that a nice guy like Steve Forbes is getting this payday and this chance at big time attention, but this is going to be essentially the last time, too. He's too tough, too all-around solid, and isn't exciting. And you can't knock him out. He's an upset waiting to happen for guys trying to build their careers, and he doesn't come with a lot of name recognition or money.
Another round where Forbes' most notable achievement was shoulder shimmying.

Round 9
More combination pressure work from Oscar, hooks and jabs landing. Forbes is covering up during those.
You know, Stevie should really just go for broke. He has nothing to lose and every single thing in the world to gain.
Steward compares Oscar's performance tonight with Mosley's against Cotto. That is preposterous.

Round 10
The praise of Oscar is a bit premature, too. I also like what Oscar's doing. But I'm imagining this against Floyd Mayweather and it doesn't look good. It looks like Floyd using his upper body to make Oscar miss, and then counter-punching relentlessly.
Oscar starts going for broke himself with a major flurry, and Forbes does all he can to stay alive. They clinch, and then back to the normal pace. A few jabs, a few failed jabs, and some attempts at coming in with the hook.
And yet another Oscar round. Clean sweep so far for me.

Round 12
About a half a round left, this has been one for the record books and nothing more. Oscar is a better, bigger, stronger fighter than Steve Forbes. We knew it coming in, and it was solidified tonight.
One nice straight right hand from Steve Forbes, and they look like they might hug it out and smile at the bell. Let's see.
Yep.
Oscar 10-9
Oscar 120-108
There are more than a couple of boos in the crowd. Anyone that came expecting something exciting was almost certainly let down.
